Q: Adjustable clasps
Lots of your necklaces say the length is adjustable. What does that mean?
A:
As of late, I have been designing necklaces finished with simple spring-ring clasps and lightweight chain endings. This allows the wearer to fasten the spring ring in multiple locations, thereby lengthening or shortening the necklace as desired. I find that with different outfits, you want your necklace to be a different length and this is one way to achieve that versatility.
Q: Gold fill
What is gold fill? Will it wear off or turn green?
A:
Gold fill is a manufacturing process created in Japan where a gold “sandwich” is created with real gold on the outside and a base metal on the inside. The gold is permanently bonded under great pressure, creating a gold surface 100 times thicker than gold plate. It is not solid gold, so it is less expensive than gold – but it will not wear off as with the cheaper process of gold-plating.
I use only 14/20 gold fill, which is the most durable type of gold fill. With precious metal prices continuing to sky-rocket, gold fill allows me to design with the timeless look of gold but at an affordable price.
Q: Duplicate pieces
Is each piece an original? Or do you make the same designs over and over?
A:
To some degree, each piece is an original because I make each by hand - therefore, no piece will be exactly the same due to small variations. Often, once I make a necklace, I don't make the exact same one again.
I tend to run in jags with a design idea and will make several variations on a theme until I feel the idea has lost its steam. Some of the newer lines, like the Paper Clip collection, are simple variations on a single theme and so could be considered less one-of-a-kind.
Of course, if a customer truly desires an item from the Gallery of previous designs, I will replicate it as closely as possible given current materials. No matter how strictly you define "original," all of my work is hand-crafted by ME and so is invetiably limited in nature.
